Addictions and habits are formed in the part of the mind that is subconscious.

Hypnotherapy is very successful in treating issues such as smoking, alcoholism, gambling, drug use, nail biting, because the programming for these behaviours can only be changed by accessing the unconscious mind. No amount of willpower can ensure success without future setbacks, but hypnosis bypasses the need for willpower to drive the change you desire.

All addictions and habits are created to help you to meet certain emotional needs. All behaviour serves a positive purpose, even when it is a behaviour that you don’t want to do anymore. In order to let go of an addiction, or change a bad habit, the emotional need that is being met by that behaviour needs to be addressed and met in a way that is going to work for you in the long term, rather than provided you with just a temporary feeling of relief or immediate satisfaction. While an undesirable behaviour gives you what you want in the short term it tends to create more problems in the long term.
